The Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019  election, Dr. Peter Gregory Obi has said that the founder of Chrisland University, Abeokuta, High Chief Dr. (Mrs.) Winifred Adefolahan Awosika will forever be remembered in the history of Nigeria for the laudable impact and achievements she has made in the Nigerian education sector.

The former governor of Anambra State said this when speaking as a guest speaker at the maiden convocation ceremony of Chrisland University, Abeokuta.

Obi who spoke on “Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: A Critical Intersection for Economic Development in Africa’ said that the failure of the leaders to invest in education and entrepreneurship led the country to its present economic state.

He noted that it is important we encourage those who has sacrificed their efforts and resources for the betterment of the country to ensure that the citizens enjoy quality education.

“When the history of this country is to be written, history will be fair to you. Nobody remembers those who have billions or millions in the banks anywhere in the world, they remember those who brought about change. And what you have done from Chrisland Nursery, Primary and now University, will be part of that history” he said.

“I assured you that history will be kind to you and you will be remembered for these great achievements” he said.

Obi lamented that Nigeria has been criminalized as he blamed the leaders for their roles in promoting corruption in in the country.

“The truth is that in Nigeria, the problem is over 75%. The country has been criminalised. Quote me, I am talking from experience of somebody who had served, I was there for eight years,” he said.

“What I found in Nigerians and your parents here, including me, I am a victim of that, I was governor for eight years, you can hardly see anybody who tells you something is wrong.

“Everybody calls you his excellency, that since you came, things have changed, even, when you know that nothing has changed.

“It is just that we have a government that has criminalised the society and people celebrate criminality. So, nobody could say to them, stop.

Speaking further, he said “Those who steal, if they come to church they will give them front seats, so, why would they not steal? They are the ones who are given chieftaincy titles, they are the ones who get tittles in the world. So, we need to change all that.”

He charged the ‘Dynamic Seven Stars’ graduates of the institution to be employers of labour and as well be a vanguard of change to move the country to a greater height among other comity of nations.

The former governor however urged the youth not to toe the lines of the previous leaders in the country. They should be employers of labour and not another set of unemployed Nigerians and also be part of the change Nigeria needs and not to be an addition to the problems facing the country.
