Professor Adeogun Olubukola Aina of the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan on Thursday said that there is still a long way to go in making some of our research findings available to the common man as there are lot of brick-walls while meeting agencies that should facilitate and translate research into the societal values.

Professor Adeogun stated this while speaking with CEOAFRICA at the 468th Inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan where Professor Oyeronke Adunni Odunola of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Ibadan delivered her inaugural lecture titled “The Bigger is the Sadder: Cancer Burden as a Challenge to Sustainable Health” at the Lakeside Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Science of the institution.

Speaking at the inaugural lecture, Professor Adeogun Said “The inaugural lecture bordered on one of the major diseases that humans are experiencing a lot in recent times which is the development of cancer and the research to mitigate cancer because the presentations of cancer either in lungs, breast and cervical cancers seem to be on the rise and in developing countries like Nigeria”.

“One of the major challenges is that, this diseases are not diagnosed on time and that has being the major pursuit for research to see whether there can be alternative method into ameliorating the cancer burdens in humans and that would reduce death from cancer” she said.

Speaking further, she said “There is still a long way to go in making some of our findings available to the common man, and that has to do with the structure that we have concerning how governmental agencies and industries use research materials from the universities;

“That’s one orientation that we need to change in Nigeria so that rapid research findings can be made applicable to the society because sometimes, when you approach the agencies that should facilitate such, you meet with a lot of brick-walls and then it becomes difficult to be able to translate research into the societal values because it takes a lot of phoning and mobilization that you need governmental arm like the public awareness arms of government to help in doing that. And that’s one area we are still hoping can improve with time” she said.

Professor Adeogun however noted that the inaugural lecturer has been able to mention some of the indigenous plants that seems to reduce the effect of cancer, and which may be a good area where we can make results from scientific research applicable to improve the health of humans.

The 468th inaugural lecture had in attendance the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, University of Ibadan, Professor K.O Adebowale; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. A.B Ekanola; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Prof. Olanike K.
