The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba AbdulRasheed Adewale Akanbi has on Thursday, 11 July, 2019 at the University of Ibadan resolves that, for kidnapping to stop in Nigeria, there should be strict implementations on National Identity Card and death penalty in the country.
The vibrant and dynamic traditional ruler, Oba Akanbi disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the 459th Inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan where Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, the Dean, faculty of Agricultural Science, University of Ibadan delivered the inaugural lecture titled ’Voice for the Voiceless Hungered Angered’.
While describing the impacts of the lecture, Oba Akanbi said, ‘’this is a lecture that has energized everyone present here today. Prof. Yahaya is truly a professor, a great speaker who has emphasized and made all his points clear in his speech as his lecture was on how to solve hunger in the nation. We all know that ‘A hungry man is an angry man’. He wants everybody to be a partaker of solution to finding how people who are in poverty and people who are suffering can be helped. That is a solution he has proffered and I hope Nigerians, governments, and leaders will heed to his voice’’.
Speaking on the kidnapping issues rocking the nation and how it can be solved, ‘’ kidnapping is the new armed robbery. In Nigeria today, there is no armed robbery unlike in the past, Kidnapping is the new business today. The only thing that can resolve this is the national identity card. We need to implement and enforce it on every Nigerian citizen to get it. This is a nation that is getting to civilization, and for any nation to be civilized, there must be a data base for the citizens to know who is who’’, he said.
Oba Akanbi stressed further that, ‘’kidnapping can be solved when we can identify the people in the nation. There should be implementation of stiff penalty for kidnapping and it should attract death penalty. This is a nation that is yet to be civilized and we only need all those civilized laws for a civilized nation. We need stiffer penalty to stop people from evil acts. In those days, before America got to the stage of making lenient laws and amending their laws, there was stiffer penalty like death penalty. We learnt shooting range from the British. So, during that time when there were no strict laws, there was death penalty. So, death penalty should come back’’.
