A South Sudan refugee has been killed in an attack near Jewi Refugee Camp in Ethiopia';s Gambella region on Friday, deputy head of the refugee community court, Gabriel Dual Chot, reveals.
Dual Chot, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the victim, Gatkek Ter Puot, was stabbed to death between the camp and Gambella town.
Dual further said two other refugees sustained injures in the attack. He claimed that the attack was carried out by members of the host community.
The camp leader pointed out that the incident happened against the backdrop of mounting tensions between two Ethiopian communities.
“Before the attack, the refugees told the attackers that they are South Sudanese refugees, not Nuer from Ethiopia… the attack happened after tensions between the Anyuak and the Nuer of Ethiopia,”he explained.
Dual noted that arrangements are in place to call for meetings with the host community and authorities to discuss security matters to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
The camp leader has expressed concern over insecurity within Jewi camp.
It was gathered that the Ethiopian government’s refugee agency, the Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Jewi Refugee Camp, one of the camps in Gambella region, is home to thousands of South Sudanese refugees.
