The president of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has paid visit to some of the injured police officers who are currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja, while condemning the attack by some protesting members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as Shi';ites.

CEOAfrica on Tuesday reported the attack on the National Assembly by some members of Shi’ites who were protesting for the release of their leader El-Zakzakky and his wife.

Sen. Lawan who was accompanied by some other senators, sympathized with the victims and wished them quick recovery.

The Senate head, however, called for the effective prosecution of those involved in the invasion of the National Assembly.

Report has it that the attack claimed the life of one Umar Abdullahi, a sergeant in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), who was beaten up by the rampaging Shiite members during their invasion of the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 9.

It was learnt that the Shi’ites broke down the first gate of the National Assembly and proceeded to the second, which serves as the main entrance to the complex. However, security operatives on ground repelled the protest with gunshots fired into the air to disperse the protesters.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered a 24-hour surveillance on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs to forestall a possible breakdown of law and order.

A statement by DCP Frank Mba, the force public relations officer in Abuja said the IGP gave the order following a violent protest by members of the El-Zakzakky Group in Abuja.
