The 19 northern state chapters of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending the proposed Ruga settlements.

The association, however, warned against any attempt to repackage the suspended proposal in the future.

CAN also charged Nigerians to be resolute in their stand against the policy anytime it is brought up again.

The Guardian reports that the organisation also urged government to focus more on fighting insecurity which include kidnapping, herdsmen and farmers’ crises and armed banditry rather than think of Ruga.

The report said the vice chairman of the northern CAN, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, issued the warning in reaction to the suspension of the policy.

Speaking in Kaduna, Joseph said the government should not have initiated the policy arguing further that with the security situation in the country, an attempt to promote land acquisition for a particular set of people would create tension.
