Manchester United said they are  set to make Aaron Wan-Bissaka the most expensive specialist full-back in history after reportedly agreeing a £55m fee with Crystal Palace.

According to the Daily Record, the Red Devils have succeeded with their renewed bid for the defender after seeing their initial approaches rejected.

It was understood the Old Trafford club initially bid £35m with a further £15m of add-ons but their latest accepted offer would exceed the €57.5m paid by Manchester City to sign Benjamin Mendy two years ago.

United have recently looked at other full-back targets such as Max Aarons from Norwich City and Napoli's Elseid Hysaj, but Wan-Bissaka has remained their top target and now looks set to enter talks over personal terms.

Recent reports suggested the 21-year-old was keen to become part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Old Trafford revolution but would not force a Selhurst Park exit.

The academy product made his Eagles debut in February 2018 and rapidly emerged as their first-choice right-back as a result of his speed and athleticism.

He started 38 matches last season, registering four assists but impressing mostly with his sound defensive abilities.

Despite a last-gasp own goal for England Under 21s as they lost 2-1 to France in their European Championship opener, United are still keen to splash the cash.

The news comes as another major boost for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the day he tied down Juan Mata to a new contract.

The experienced midfielder was tipped to depart on a free this summer but has been convinced to stay put.

The club announced he has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for a further one year extension.

If Wan-Bissaka does join United for the reported £55m fee, he will become their second record full-back signing after left-back Luke Shaw cost a then-record fee for a teenage defender in his £30m Southampton switch in 2014.

Despite high expectations of Wan-Bissaka, he was fired a warning by fellow young right-back Diogo Dalot last week as the Portuguese hotshot declared his desire to make the starting spot his own next season.

"I want to make my statement in the team and play as much as I can at right-back because I think it's my best position. I just need to prove that to the manager with my work," Dalot told Man United's official website.
