Sequel to the Inaugural Lecture in honour of Late Honourable Olatoye Temitope Sugar held at the Banquet Hall, Premier Hotel, Ibadan, history was said to repeat itself again, tracing the memory lane of where the icon was murdered on the 9th of March, during the 2019 Oyo State governorship election.

The Guest speaker at the memorial lecture of the late Hon. Sugar, Dr.Tunde Hamzat, a scholar who was once reported to have been kidnapped, but later released under the influence of the Late Honourable Temitope Sugar explored  the significance of the demise, and his outright magnanimity to humanity, in his lecture titled ‘Sugar’s Death and Leadership; Recruitment process.’

He said “the collective manipulation of people’s emotion for the wrong reasons through ethnic and religious sentiment for electoral advantage must be interrogated and challenged.

“And this can only be achieved by meticulously engaging the citizenry to become actively involved in the leadership recruitment process; the system must be assisted to migrate from worshipping at the shrine of leadership ignorance to the altar of useful knowledge.”

In lieu of the topic’s elucidation, there was a memorial refrain relatable to the death of the demise of which, the late honourable was said to be murdered around Lalupon Axis. The same area in Ibadan where some icons were assassinated in time past.

On 29th of July, 1966, General Thomas Aguiyi Ironsi was recorded to be murdered along that axis as well, while he was on a state visit to the western region in which General Adekunle Fajuyi was also murdered on the long run, while receiving the visitation.

December 23, 2001, also had the assassination of Late Chief Bola Ige around this south-western city of Ibadan.

September 16, 2007, Honourable Olusegun Oladimeji, politically known as Segelu, a representative of Akinyele/ Lagelu constituency of the House of Representatives was also recorded to be shot at the leg, some moves away from the axis , in which he didn’t survive the attack.

Giving the etymology of why these misconducts of similitude were been rampant, Dr. Hamzat explored that the level of poverty has taken a tow in this retrospect, because, when someone who finds it difficult to have a means of livelihood is been brought such rigorous offer, such person might embrace the offer of assassination with open arms.

He concluded that the major root here is intellectual impoverishment, seen as the greatest poverty that can behold humanity apart from the materialistic basis.

Proffering solutions to this milieu, Dr. Hamzat explored Chinua Achebe’s word which states “we need to ask ourselves: Where does the rain start beating us? ”In this regard, he concluded by saying “before Nigeria can be reinvented, she needs to be renegotiated.”

Dignitaries present at the event include; the Oyo state governor represented by the Commissioner for Education Professor Olowofela; the former executive governor of Oyo state, Chief Alao Akala represented by his running mate at the last gubernatorial election, Professor Olaiya Abiodun; the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly represented by Honourable Olabamiji; Honourable Siwaju Yemi Aderibigbe and Honourable Alli representing the 7th assembly.
