BREAKING THE NORM : kENYA based teacher wins 2019 Global Teacher Prize

Keriko Mixed Secondary School teacher Peter Tabichi has been named the 2019 Global Teacher Prize winner after seeing off competition from other 10,000 contenders in Dubai ceremony.
Tabichi is poised to receive Sh100 million as the prize for the accolade to crown his rise to global recognition.
The 36-year old was nominated for the precious award, organized by Varkey Foundation, after being recognized for helping students by according them moral and financial support.
Tabichi who is teaching Maths and Physics was named one among the top 10 finalist for the award that attarcted applicants from 179 countries.
 Part of what may have inspired his clinching of the award was the fact that he donated 80 percent of his income to the needy students, with many beneficiaries located in Pwani Village, Nakuru County.
A profile of Peter Tabichi in the Global Teacher Prize website reads: “Peter Tabichi is a science teacher who gives away 80% of his monthly income to help the poor. His dedication, hard work and passionate belief in his student’s talent has led his poorly-resourced school in remote rural Kenya to emerge victorious after taking on the country’s best schools in national science competitions.”
Tabichi is also said to have formed groups to nurture students along various science disciplines as well as coordinating teacher-student relationship.
"Peter started a talent nurturing club and expanded the school’s Science Club, helping pupils design research projects of such quality that 60% now qualify for national competitions. Peter mentored his pupils through the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair 2018 – where students showcased a device they had invented to allow blind and deaf people to measure objects," his profile further reads.
