Chrisland VC, Prof. Chinedum Babalola Speaks at Africa’s Population Roundtable

The Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University, Professor Chenudum Peace Babalola was among the selected few of think-thank for Africa Progress Group (APG) whose primary objective is to turn Africa';;s teaming population as a potential asset to the continent and not a liability. The conference which held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, on 20th February, 2019 has important and resource people in attendance which include former President of Nigeria His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as chairman of the occasion, Prof. Peter Eigen of Transparency International (Co-chair) and Prof, Akin Mabogunje.  

 According to United Nations Report, by 2050 Africa’s young population - aged between 0 and 24 years old, will increase by nearly 50 percent. This is to imply that the continent will have the largest number of young people, making up nearly twice the young population of South Asia and Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania. It also discussed on the advantages of using Africa Population as an asset to providing security, healthy hygienic food, employment, welfare, governance among others.

The reports having hype praises on Africa’s youth as the innovators, leaders, and workers of the future, stressing the importance of investing in health and education in order to unlock their productivity and innovation, thus reducing poverty; the report also cites the risks of insecurity, instability, and mass migration as consequences for inaction. The round table highlighted the alarming and unchecked rate of population growth in Africa as well as estimated what will happen by 2050.

 It is against this background, the Africa Progress Group (APG) organized the international roundtable centred on making Africa';;s population an asset rather than liability; taking advantage of Africa’s productive population age.

Prof. Peace Chinedum Babalola who was among the dignitaries that graced the event, shared her wealth of intellect prowess, emphasizing the urgent need to look deep and dig out the hidden treasures in Africa to make the continent vibrant and attractive.

Experts in the field of Demography, Education, Business, Governance and host of others from Europe and other African countries including Nigeria, were in attendance. The keynote speaker was Mr Jonathan Oppenheimer from South Africa, while Prof. Peter Okebukola was the director of the event.
