A one-time President of Liberia, Prof Amos Sawyer, has showed concerns over the use of social media in stirring violence during the forthcoming elections.

Sawyer, in his opening remark at an ongoing one-day peace conference by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, tagged ‘Peaceful Elections and National Development,’ held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, commended former President Jonathan for his role in sustaining democracy in Nigeria.

The Liberian former president said the challenges that may persist in electoral process include the use of digital media.

He said, “Social media poses significant challenges and increases the risk of incitement and conflict. It requires robust countermeasures by civil organisations and peace committee.

“The role of the media, though sometimes annoying, is vital and should be protected.”
