The President of ACALAN Assembly of Academician of African Academy of Languages (ACALAN) Prof. Beban Chumbow has revealed that ACALAN is intensifying efforts to get the linguistic atlas project over the line. He made this known while speaking at the ongoing ACALAN meeting on collaboration with CERTODOLA on linguistic atlas holding in Yaounde.
According to him, “ACALAN organized this meeting with CERTODOLA so that we can see what we can do together to ensure the atlas project is realized, to initiate a cross fertilization of ideas that will enable us to move the agenda of the linguistic atlas forward as expected by the African Union.
“We need to come up with the different element of data and information that are necessary to execute the project. We are working to ensure that every country produces the necessary data that will make us proceed to producing maps. In doing so, I would like to remind us of another recommendation of the Bamako meeting, it was recommended that we should look at the output and result of Enolog. Enolog has maps, data of languages of various countries. The recommendation is that we should look at that as input to the process of linguistic atlas.
He further noted that after having about four meetings that sufficient data has been gathered which would provide useful data and information for the actualization of the linguistic atlas project.
“I think we have a lot of useful information and data and we should proceed quickly to the production of linguistic atlas. Our target right now is what we can produce so that the African Union and its members can see,” he said.
