Youths of Akenfa and Edepie communities in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa state on Saturday took over the streets of Yenagoa to protest the killing of a 300 level undergraduate student of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Mr Tarila Nakede, by a police officer attached to the patrol team in Akenfa division.

The deceased undergraduate, was shot under questionable circumstances by the police officer, Sergeant Emmanuel Timadi at Tenacious Road around 8pm on Friday.

Angered by the alleged extra-judicial killing, the youths of the area in the early hours of today took to the streets to vent their grievances and called on police authority to investigate the cause of Nakede’s killing, which according to them is neither a cultist or armed robber.

Meanwhile, the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) in Bayelsa State has called on the Commissioner of Police in the state to investigate the killing and ensure the perpetrator is brought to book.

The chairman of CLO in the state, Chief Nengi James, while condemning the killing, urged police officers to be civil and professional in discharging their duties so that innocent citizens will not be subjected to unnecessary humiliation.

The Bayelsa state police command today confirmed the incident, and condoled with the family of the deceased student, assuring them that justice will be done.

Police spokesman in the state, DSP Asinim Butswat, told journalists that the Sergeant involved in the killing has already been disarmed and  arrested and is undergoing orderly room trial, saying investigation is in progress.

He appealed to the deceased family and residents of the area to be calm, because the command will ensure that justice prevails.
