Ugandan Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Honourable Mutuuzu Peace Regis has charged African Head of States on the promotion of indigenous African languages.

She gave the charge while speaking at the ongoing African Academy of Languages, ACALAN workshop on the harmonization of Kinyarwanda/Kirundi, Kiswahili, Luganda, Malagasy and Somali cross border languages holding in Kampala.

She stated that we are first Africans before anything and should therefore take the promotion of African languages seriously as it is a vital tool for the integration and development of Africa.

"In Uganda, a lot of work is been done to improve and promote local languages. For instance, the language of instruction from primary one to primary four is the mother tongue," she stated.

She also made a case for the adoption of one African language to be used as official language.
