A non-political pressure group, Imo Forum for Unity and Peace Initiative (IFUPI) has expressed concern over the resurgence of politically-motivated killings in Imo state.

It is planning a peace summit to sensitive politicians and the voting public on the need to maintain peace before, during and after the election.

In a press briefing in Owerri, the group expressed concern that an election, which is meant to be a period of stock taking and decision making where the votes counts and decisions made has often turned to be a period of violence, pains, casualties, destruction and death.

In the text of briefing signed the Director General, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, Executive Director, Prince Magnus Ik Okeke and Programmes Officer, Kelechi Aguwuom, the group said the peace summit would feature prayer and worship sessions, lectures, admonition, and interactions bordering on unity non-violence and the enthronement of peaceĀ  Imo.

Participants expected at the summit on August 31 include religious bodies, traditional institution and professional bodies like the Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Medical Association, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, student bodies and civil society organisations.
