Chief of party of the United States Pharmacopeia Convention (USP) in Nigeria Dr Chimezie Anyakora has made a clarion call to Nigerians to join hands with the federal government to eradicate fake drugs in Nigeria.

Dr Anyakora made this known in an exclusive interview with CEOAfrica on Wednesday. Where he stated that ‘‘good quality of drugs is a basic human right and NAFDAC is doing its best in order to eradicate fake drugs. A lot of professional bodies are actually involved in this eradication program and we can see improvement.’’

He encouraged citizens of the country to join in the fight of fake drugs ‘‘Nigerians need to change their orientation about leaving the fight to a particular regulatory body. Medicine quality is a fundamental human right and the fight against fake medicines involves everybody. Treatment failure we witness today is usually the lack of quality drugs but, the health care practitioners are really working hard to ensure that fake drugs are eradicated fully,’’ he said.

The USP Chief of Party emphasised that, medicine quality is a multifaceted issue and USP is working with NAFDAC, Manufacturers of medicines, Universities to ensure they produce trained professionals, Ministry of health to ensure the health policies are in order and stake holders all in the name of spreading medicine quality. ‘‘Lack of medicine can lead to death, loss of money even prolong illness, so we must put all effort to ensure the spread of quality medicines especially in Nigeria.’’
