Fish sellers in Ibadan on Thursday protested against the high cost of the frozen products. The sellers had in their hundreds marched to various cold rooms in the state capital protesting against the high prices.

They said to have forced those selling in whole sales to close their down their cold room. The owners of the cold rooms had pleaded with the protesting fish sellers to allow them dispose their stock before embarking on the protest.

It was gathered that the prices of the fishes had been increased double their leaving no profit for the sellers.  One of the fish sellers identified as Iya Michael told our correspondent that Titus which formerly sold for N8,000, now sell for N15,000, Sardines which sold for N3,000 now sell for N8,000 while Panla which sold for N5,000 now sell for N10,000.

As a result, many of the sellers have been thrown out of business, as they could not afford the new prices.

She said most of the cold room owners had always attributed the high cost to the Federal Government plan to stop importation of frozen foods including fish. She disclosed that the protesters had went round the state capital to ensure that nobody hawk or sell the product to the final consumers.

The protesters had also threatened to arrest and fine anybody caught selling the products. They were said to have held meeting to boycott all the cold rooms until prices of fishes were brought to the level of the masses.
