CEOAFRICA gathered that Pavic of Croatia clinched the Futures II men’s singles title of the 13th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship which ended at the weekend at Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.

The number four seed who had earlier lost in the final of Futures I dismissed number two seed Indian Jeevan Neduchezayan 6-4, 6-3.

Pavic who earned $15,000 prize money for his heroics in a post-match interview attributed his victory to patience.

“I think I played very well against Jeevan, he is also technically sound. I guess my patience has paid off. I really enjoyed my two-week stay in Lagos and I will come to this great city again because the Governor’s Cup and Lagos will always be in my history book,” Pavic said.

His ‘victim’ in his remarks acknowledged that Pavic was better on the day.

“I did not play well. I think I lost because I started serving wrongly at a point, but I hope to work more on my service and work harder to correct all my weaknesses when I return to India,” Neduchezayan said.

In the women’s singles, unseeded Gioia Barbieri created an upset when she triumphed over number two seed and former champion, Russian Nina Bratchikova in a game which ended in 3-6, 6-3,3-0 retired.

“I’m happy to have won this championship, I cherish every second that I spent in Lagos in the last two weeks. Nina played better than I did in the first set and that got me scared but I did not lose hope,” the Italian said.
