The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned politicians against acts that are capable of overheating the polity ahead of the 2015 election.

This INEC boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega, gave this warning during the third quarterly consultative meeting held between the commission and political parties.

Speaking at the meeting, Prof. Jega reminded the leaders of the parties of the provisions of Section 99(1) of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, which limits campaign periods to 90 days before the polling day and 24 hours to election.

He urge the politicians that while preparing ahead of the 2015 general election, they should make every effort to cooperate, partner and support the commission in order to ensure that free, fair and credible elections is delivered in Nigeria.

He particularly emphasized the politicians to avoid the temptation of any act that would hamper peaceful conduct and civility in political engagements and electioneering in order to keep and sustain democracy in the nation.

Jega presented a highlight of petitions INEC received against political parties that lack any presence in some states but habitually present candidates whenever there is election.

He therefore urged the politicians to support democratic growth by retracting their quest for elective offices to areas they have institutional presence and also avoid the rising tendency towards thuggery in campaigns and elections
