The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Akinwumi Adesina, on Friday attributed the attraction of over $5.6 billion into the economy within the last three years, because government deliberately exercised a strong political will to tackle the corruption associated with the distribution of seedlings and fertilizer to rural farmers across the country.

He said: "Farmers never used to get their fertilizer because of the massive corruption in that sector. The fertilizers meant for them would develop legs and walk away into the farms of rich and famous people and that was because government was involved in the buying and distribution of fertilizer.

"There was massive leakage in the system and under this administration; we ended corruption of over 40 years within 90 days. We ended the era of buying and selling fertilizer by government as that is not the role of government anyway to having the private sector do it and as a result the farmers all across the country and with their electronic wallet.

"This brought transparency; accountability and probity in the use of government subsidy with over 14.5 million farmers are getting their improved seedlings and fertilizer on time."

He said the deliberate initiative of President Goodluck Jonathan administration to diversify the economy through making a business and wealth creation brought such a monumental investment into the sector.
