We can say that Red meat is a meat that is Red when raw and not white when cooked. Red meat is very important in our diet, it is very tasty and satisfying depending on how it is been prepared .There are several types of red meat e.g. beef ,lamb, pork .Red meat has essential nutrient and they are beneficial to our health.

Red meat is a good source of protein. Protein gives energy and helps to keep muscle, bones, cartilage, blood and other organs healthy. It repairs the body. Eating sufficient quantities of protein improves the strength and appearances of our skin and nails; maintains cell which contains protein including the antibody cells of the immune system which protect the body against pathogens.

Red meat is also a rich source of iron. Iron is vital for energy metabolism, DNA synthesis, Neurological development, formation of red blood cells, growth and healing, normal immune functioning and reproduction. Iron is very important to health because when easily absorbed it assist blood haemoglobin in carrying oxygen to the body’s cells. It is deficiency in the body may lead to fatigue, headache and dizziness. Also, red meat is important for women particularly during and after menstruation when the loss of blood brings down iron levels.

Another important mineral in abundance in red meat is zinc. It promotes healthy skin particularly healing from acne and eczema and immune systems, combats the effect of premature aging due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Red meat particularly beef and lamb are rich in zinc.

Vitamin B is also present in red meat , concentrated particularly in the liver. Vitamin B-12: stimulates growth in children, stimulates the body utilization of proteins fat and carbohydrates, Vitamin B-6: maintains healthy skin and hair regulates mental processes and mood levels; Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) repairs and develops body tissue including the eyes, skin, and connective tissue.

Vitamin B-3 (Niacin) generates energy from foods, metabolizes carbohydrates, protein and fat, It supports the central nervous system function.

Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic acid )  fight infections by  building antibodies, improves the body’s resistance to stress. Helps in cell building and development of the central nervous system.

Red meat has its down falls, studies has shown that red meat eaten too much can predispose one to cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and also has effect on bone health leading to a greater risk of osteoporosis. It is becoming clear through research studies made that eating too much red meat may cause severe medical conditions. Therefore red meat consumption should be done moderately.
