2015: Obasanjo Denies Endorsing Anyone For President

Former Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo has denied endorsing an aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2015 presidential elections. Speaking through his ally Oyewole Fasawe in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on October 13, Obasanjo, PDP membership card holder, explained that he had neither endorsed nor condemned any candidate of any Nigeria’s party heading for the office, Premium Times reports.

After the last week’s separate visits by Senate President David Mark and head of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu to the ex country leader, it was alleged that Obasanjo had warned the opposition leaders not to field Atiku Abubakar.

In his Monday speech, Obsanjo assured Nigerians of his unbiased attitude to all the parties adding that he would not endorse one over the other even if some try to put pressure on him.

His representative Mr. Fasawe was quoted saying:

“Baba has not endorsed anyone and has not condemned anyone. A statesman of his stature and pedigree can only pray and work towards peace and progress in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. Those trying to exploit his friendliness to gain political advantage over other contenders are being unfair and doing so without Obasanjo’s approval.”

Last week the news broke out that the leaders of the ruling party represented by its National Chairman Adamu Mu’azu begged the former president to forgive them calling the party members his “children”. The statement read in part:

“We have made mistakes and baba, please forgive us. Come and lead us. We are your followers and we assure you that we are all good boys and girls. We have sinned. Baba please forgive us.”

It would be recalled that Atiku Abubakar declared his presidential bid on September 24, running on the platform of the APC.

Another key figure of the opposition party, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, is expected to make an official declaration on October 15.

Meanwhile the PDP endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole candidate, with the party primaries to be hold on December 6, 2014.
