For good results, approach issues in extra ordinary ways - Winifred tells Police

WYNZ CREATION organized a training for superior police officers in public relation today 23rd July 2014; in Oyo State. The goal of the training and seminar was to equip the Nigeria police force to perform better.

The resource person, Winifred Ochinyabo who is a consultant and trainer started by defining the meaning of public relations and went on to enumerate the things the Nigeria police must do to help them build a good public relation which include interacting with the public in a pleasant way, attend to people in a respectful way, help people solve their problems professionally, provide assistance when requested or not such as helping school children cross the road, address people politely , relate well with the media and she concluded that police must be involved in community development programme such cleaning of the environment. 

The resource person said that the essence of the training is to help the police know that if they approach issues in the same way they have been doing, then they will achieve the same result. The police must approach issue in an extra ordinary way then they will achieve good result and the public relation that the police is building will be enhanced, she stated that the police can do that by coming to the level of the populace and if they have to come down to the level of the populace there must be good internal relations.

When asked if there is hope in sight regarding the police changing their of behaviour she replied that in the proper school of knowledge there are lots of people present; many are hearing, some listening and you find some ready to make changes and with the reaction of the officers then it means that they are ready for change. The officers were divided into five groups with different assignments to work on in which group four won the presentation and they were presented with cash present.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula during an interview with CEOAFRICA’s correspondents asserted that the police force is now better and responsive. The police are doing very well and the public is appreciating our work and our relationship has increased under the new Inspector-General of police and the Nigeria Police is now very marvellous. He stated that the need for the training was to enhance the men of the force and help them set up a good public relation with the society so that they don’t remain redundant. On the issue of bad eggs in the force, the DCP stated that the police is one of the force that tries to identify, investigate, dismiss and prosecute the bad eggs from its midst.

The PPRO, Mrs Olabisi Ilobanafor concluded that police officers must tolerate members of the public saying that if a man bites a dog, it becomes news but its normal when a dog bites a man.
