The President, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, Mr. Ayodapo Shoderu, has urged the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria to lend more support to the development of the broking business.

He said this when he led a delegation of the council on a visit to the CIIN office in Lagos.

The delegation was received by the President, CIIN, Mr. Bola Temowo, and members of the council.

“Being a member of the board of the National Insurance Commission, it is quite apposite for me to appeal to the CIIN to prevail on the commission to further assist the growth of insurance broking, particularly in softening its declaration on the request for brokers to make declaration of their accounts on monthly basis,” he said.

On the lapsing of licences of brokers by the commission, Shoderu appealed to the commission to extend its act of compassion to minimise the exercise.

“As we are all aware, the insurance industry has remained fragile and we need a lot of concession for the operators to grow the profession in the country,” he said.

As the professional arm of the industry, he said the institute owed it a duty to continually motivate intra industry collaboration, especially between insurance brokers and underwriters.

He said it was a thing of regret that attempts to broker a meeting between the NCRIB and the NIA did not materialise for quite a while.

However, he added that the NCRIB had slated a meeting between it and the new Chairman of the NIA, Mr. Gus Wiggle, with the belief that the meeting would kick-start a revived relationship between the two bodies.

He noted that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, had stood out as the most insurance-friendly governor.

For this reason, he said it was being conceived that an appreciation evening be organised by the industry for the governor.

“This initiative will position the industry more positively in the eyes of the government and be a source of inspiration for other states to engage the services of insurance brokers,” Shoderu said.
