Governor Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa on Thursday attributed the poor reading habit in Nigeria to technological advancement.

Bindow made the observation at a `Readership Promotion Campaign’ organised by the National Library of Nigeria in Yola.

The governor, who was represented by the Speaker, Adamawa House of Assembly, Kabiru Mijinyawa, said that Nigerians should be encouraged to develop the culture of reading to enhance knowledge.

According to him, the decline in our reading habit was a result of advancement in technology.

He gave assurance that his administration would support the library in the bid to enhance reading habit.

The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Mustapha Barkindo, urged the state Ministry of Urban Planning to relocate all shops and businesses at the entrance of the library gate.

Barkindo stressed the need to make the library environment conducive to reading.

Lamido, who was represented by Alhaji Baba Paris, Chief of Jimeta, advised the library management to keep the environment clean.

According to him, a library should be noise free and with a clean environment to stimulate reading.

The National Librarian, Prof. Lanre Aina, called on states to develop their libraries to encourage reading habit.

Aina also advised the states to provide reading materials in schools.
