A lawyer and Ijaw youth activist, Oweilaemi Pereotubo, has condemned in strong terms the illegal and continued detention of the 10 students arrested from Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, by the military in search of Niger Delta Avengers operatives, saying it was a gross violation of their fundamental human rights and so, unconstitutional.

Pereotubo in Warri, Delta State, said it was worrisome that after over two months of their arrest, no formal charge had been brought against the 10 students who were writing their WAEC examination as they have been kept incommunicado, while their families and communities do not knows of their whereabouts or their well being

Condemning the recent arrest of Simeon Bebenimibo, a member of Delta State Waterways and Land Security Committee and one Bomboy Oluwa, Pereotubo said that the operation of the military leaves much to be desired as they have continued to harass and intimidate innocent persons in the guise of looking for militants and pipeline vandals.

He noted that the modus operandi of the military purely negates the rules of engagement as their behaviour was causing tension in the region, hence, the need for them to be cautioned by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He called for the release of the 10 students who have already missed their examination, wondering who will compensate them.

‘’We the Ijaws do not want a repeat of what happened to Odi and Gbaramatu, when these communities were destroyed by the military.’’
