As part of efforts to fine-tune the trajectory geared towards finding a solution to power generation and distribution in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Power met with relevant stakeholders in the power sector to put logistics in place for the first summit to take place under the current administration.

The theme of the summit is Powering Africa and is billed to take place September 14 and 15 at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. This will be the very first gathering of stakeholders in the power sector following the successful inter-part transition in May.

In the absence of appointed Ministers under the Buhari-led administration, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has saddled himself with the responsibility of maintaining the current momentum in the transitional phase of the power sector.

There has been on-going consultation between the office of the vice-president and several stakeholders in the power industry among which are the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Finance, the Presidential Task Force on Power, the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Bulk Trading Company, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority among others.

The renewed collaboration and optimism among stakeholders in the power sector is a testament to the level of confidence that has been invested in the new administration.

The public sector confirmed that despite the anomalies still prominent in the power sector, the Vice President, Permanent Secretaries and stakeholders in the public sector are still very much active in ensuring that momentum is not lost and that the hand over to the new Minister – when appointed – will be smooth, efficient and with purpose.

Among those, on whose shoulders rest the bulk of the task ahead is Dr. Godknows Igali; the permanent secretary in the ministry of power who was part of the delegation that travelled to the United States with President Buhari.

The summit will also create a platform for dialogue between the international and local power players, the relevant government agencies and the stakeholders in the private sector.
