Ibadan branch of Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, to hold Workshop and Life Member Award Ceremony

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), lbadan branch, is set to hold a significant workshop, life member award ceremony and Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The theme of workshop which will hold at the Department of Zoology, University of lbadan, is “Building a Career Path in Academia: Guiding Principles for the Female Academic.”

Two female academic experts have been scheduled to speak on the subthemes of the workshop. Dean Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of lbadan, Prof Oyeronke Odunola will speak on “Breaking the Glass Ceiling and Sustainability Nexus” while the Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University, Professor Chinedum Babalola FAS, FAAS, will speak on “Collaboration Outside the Box.”

Professor Chinedum Babalola is a leading Professor of Pharmacy in Nigeria with many internation recognitions and awards for her several academic feats. Babalola is a recipient of several fellowships, awards and grants, whose research has been focused on ethics of human research, pharmacogenetics, clinical trials, drug interaction PK/PD, and non-communicable diseases (Sickle cell disease and cancer). On the other hand, Professor Oyeronke Odunola is the Director of Research, Cancer Research Laboratories at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Ibadan and has thirty-seven (37) years of teaching and research experience in cancer research and molecular biology, environmental toxicology, immune-oncology, nutritional genomics, and climate change. She also has expertise in research administration and management, and community engagement.

The Ibadan Coordinator of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World is Prof. Aina Adeogun, is a Professor of Aquatic Toxicology, Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan. Among her many achievements, she pioneered research on Endocrine disruption in Aquatic organisms towards ensuring water and food safety especially for the vulnerable subpopulation (women and children) in tropical environments with a dependence on natural fish food as preferred protein sources.

OWSD Nigeria National Chapter was founded in 2010 with many branches across universities in the country. The organisation is a voluntary international organization of women researchers aimed at fostering collaboration among women in Universities, Research Institutes and Allied Institutions towards ensuring research activities focused on societal growth and development. OWSD Ibadan branch membership comprises of over 350 members from University of Ibadan in all faculties and institutes and sister research institutes like NIHORT, NAGGRAB, CRIN, FCAH&PT, The Polytechnic Ibadan, NISER, FRIN, IAR&T, IITA amongst others. Their programs are aimed at fostering collaboration between female academics towards providing robust and applicable solutions to societal needs. They also provide research training and networking opportunities for women researchers throughout the developing world at different stages in their careers.
